KINGSTON, Jamaica – Caribbean Cement Company Limited (CCCL) has announced that it has invested more than $7.7 million through its Emergency Disaster Relief Fund to assist communities affected by the recent passage of Hurricane Beryl.
The funding, provided through the company’s ultimate parent company, Cemex, was used to provide non-perishable food packages, zinc sheets, zinc screws and plywood, according to a news release. Cement was also allocated to the communities.
So far, it is reported that more than 100 families have benefited in the communities of Harbour View in St Andrew, Trench Town in Kingston, Woodside in Clarendon and 11 Miles in Bull Bay, St Thomas.
Commenting on the donation after the handover of supplies and food items took place at Denbigh Church of the Nazarene in Woodside, Clarendon on Monday, July 9, CCCL Managing Director Jorge Martinez expressed satisfaction with the work his team has done to meet the needs of the community.
“This marks an important step in our efforts to support communities in need, especially given our response times. The dedication shown by our teams is truly commendable, ensuring vital resources reach those who need them most. We remain committed to making a meaningful impact on the lives of others,” he said.
Meanwhile, Social Impact Specialist Jerome Cowans expressed pride in being part of an organization that shows compassion for the community.
“It’s inspiring to witness first-hand the positive difference Caribe Cement makes in people’s lives and I look forward to continuing our social impact mission,” he said.
Responding to the company’s efforts, Pastor Carlton Bryan of Denbigh Church of the Nazarene said the church, as well as the local community, was grateful for CCCL’s support, as the church was vital in helping those affected by Hurricane Beryl.
“We know that like other parishes, people in this area have been affected, but we are extremely grateful that Caribe Cement has sought to give back to this community,” he said.
Meanwhile, community facilitator and 11 Miles Bull Bay resident Lamar Clark also expressed his gratitude to CCCL for its support to the community.
“Several people have been displaced and normally have to rebuild before they can return to their homes so any assistance to help people get back to normal life is welcome and we are grateful,” he said.
