BRASILIA, Brazil (AFP) — Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed hope for a “civilized” U.S. election in November, following the unexpected withdrawal of incumbent President Joe Biden as a candidate.
In a statement to international media on Monday, Lula emphasized the importance of maintaining democratic norms and civility during the election process. “Whether the winner is the Democratic candidate or Donald Trump, our relations will be civilized. I hope that this election campaign will be conducted in the most civilized way possible and that nothing happens that would endanger the symbols of democracy,” Lula said.
The unexpected turn of events follows Biden’s withdrawal after concerns about his age and mental health intensified following a contentious debate with Trump in June. The 81-year-old Biden has since endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor.
Harris could secure the nomination as early as August 1 but would still need to gain support from her primary opponents. Meanwhile, some Democrats are advocating for an open primary to ensure broad party participation.
Biden’s presidency has been marred by controversy, including the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot and ongoing legal challenges faced by Trump, who is currently facing felony charges related to attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.
As the political landscape evolves, Lula’s call for a peaceful and democratic process highlights global concerns about the stability and integrity of U.S. elections.
