Shootings and other violence over the Independence Day weekend left at least 33 people dead, including 11 in Chicago, and dozens injured across the country, authorities said.
According to an Associated Press article, the Fourth of July has historically been one of the deadliest days of the year in the United States.
In 2023, several shootings left more than a dozen people dead and more than 60 injured, and in 2022, a shooting occurred during a Fourth of July Independence Day parade near Chicago, leaving seven people dead.
The Associated Press reported Thursday that 11 people had been killed and 55 injured in Chicago alone by Friday morning over the extended Independence Day weekend, including a mass shooting that left two women and an 8-year-old boy dead.
