Africa, the subject of many songs, was the inspiration for singer Alwaine Love’s latest single, “Africa The Motherland,” which she wrote after extensive research on the continent.
The album was produced by Christopher Campbell of South Florida-based T25 Records and was released on June 28th.
The artist credits the internet with erasing misconceptions about Africa.
“I was inspired by the facts uncovered about Africa, mainly through social media, and after further research I came to the conclusion that Africans are not the uncivilized, barbaric and submissive people that they are often portrayed to be in mainstream Western society, but rather are the place where all civilisation began and where mathematics, geometry and many other disciplines and cultural practices were invented or created that have significantly shaped the world today,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
The St Mary-born artist, who previously recorded as J Love, began his career in the gospel world before switching to secular music and has recorded for high profile labels such as Tadds International Records.
The change in stage name has also led to a shift in musical focus, a shift that can be heard on Africa The Motherland, which he hopes will provide him with information he wasn’t getting at school.
“When I was in high school, I didn’t learn enough about Africa other than the triangular trade (the transatlantic slave trade), which I found very depressing and didn’t further my interest in understanding my country,” said Alwain Love, who hopes to visit the region one day.
