Cornwall College Secures Spot in ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup Round of 16
Cornwall College’s victory over Spot Valley High in the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup Group 1 game on Tuesday was more than just a win; it was a redemption story. After drawing their first two games, Cornwall College found themselves on the brink of elimination. However, a late surge saw them score four goals in just 11 minutes, propelling them to a 4-0 victory and securing a spot in the round of 16.
For first-year coach Theodore Whitmore, this win was a testament to his team’s resilience and determination. “We had set out to making it past the (Round of 32) and now we are looking forward to the next round,” Whitmore said after the game. He acknowledged that the road ahead would only get tougher but was confident in his team’s ability to rise to the challenge.
On the other side, Spot Valley High, despite a strong showing in the earlier stages of the competition, faltered in the Round of 32, losing all three games. Coach Damion Nelson, however, remained positive, giving his team a seven out of 10 grade for their season overall. He emphasized the importance of mental strength in the later stages of the competition and highlighted the need to capitalize on opportunities and minimize mistakes.
Looking ahead, both teams have their sights set on the future. Whitmore aims to continue pushing his players to the next level, addressing areas of improvement and maintaining discipline on the field. Nelson, on the other hand, sees this season as a learning opportunity for his young squad, with plans to regroup and come back stronger next year.
While Cornwall College celebrates their qualification for the round of 16, Spot Valley High reflects on their season, acknowledging both the highs and lows. As the competition intensifies, both teams know that the road ahead will be challenging but are determined to give their all in pursuit of victory.
