ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — Accompong Maroon chief Richard Curry has been identified as a suspect in an incident where seven Forest Service personnel were reportedly barricaded at QuickStep in St Elizabeth over the weekend. Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay from the police confirmed that Curry is required to report to the St Elizabeth district headquarters in Black River by 10am on Monday for further discussion.
The confrontation occurred when Forest Department officials attempted to remove mahogany timber from QuickStep on Friday. The officials, who were conducting enforcement operations, discovered the timber and arranged for its removal. However, they were allegedly attacked and subsequently barricaded by Curry’s supporters, preventing them from contacting the police until late into the night.
A police team, along with the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and fire department personnel, intervened on Saturday afternoon to rescue the trapped officials.
Curry has publicly questioned the Forest Service’s actions, expressing concerns about the fate of the mahogany and the perceived handling of the situation.
