Manchester, Jamaica – At least 13 people have been evacuated to New Forest High School and Mandeville Primary School on Wednesday as Hurricane Beryl hit parts of the country, including Manchester, with strong winds.
Mandeville Mayor Donovan Mitchell, a leader at the Manchester Emergency Operations Centre, reported that 10 homeless individuals have been sheltered at Mandeville Primary School and three at New Forest High School.
“A psychiatric team from the Ministry of Health is working to rescue more people and bring them to shelters. Food is available, and there is a shelter manager on site. Police are also assisting,” Mayor Mitchell said.
He urged residents of Alligator Pond to move to higher ground. “There are currently three people evacuated to New Forest High School, and we hope others from the Alligator Pond and Duff House area will evacuate there for safety,” he added.
Additionally, reports have been received of a tree down on Winston Jones Highway due to the hurricane’s strong winds.
